The park is a home to 76 species of mammals including the four of the bi five land animals. The big four in Murchison Falls National Park include; Elephants, buffaloes, leopard and lion. The Rhinos were present in the park but due to excessive poaching that characterized Uganda’s protected areas during the turbulent times of 1970s and early 80s, they faced extinction in the year 1983. However, they were later re -introduced and are being bred in the adjacent Rhino Sanctuary with the view of re-introducing them in the wilderness. Murchison Falls National Park also has great counts of other wildlife including Jackson’s Hartebeest, Uganda Kobs, Giraffe, bush bucks, wart hogs, patas monkeys, olive baboons, topis, chimpanzees in the nearby Kaniyo – Pabidi extension, aquatics beings of the Nile including Hippos and Nile crocodiles among other species that combine to make Murchison Falls National Park a memorable destination that should not be missed while on Uganda safaris and tours.
Amazingly, species like Giraffe only thrive in Murchison and Kidepo National Parks in the whole of Uganda.
